Porocel's Excel® Rejuvenation Technology


Porocel’s patented Excel® rejuvenation process is a step beyond standard catalyst regeneration. It offers a means for restoring spent catalysts, especially the highly active Type II, to greater than 90% of the catalyst’s original activity, depending on certain physical and chemical criteria.



  • The patented Excel rejuvenation process gives refiners an excellent alternative to fresh catalyst in a wide range of hydrotreating applications from naphtha to heavy gas oil.



  • First Porocel evaluates the spent catalyst to ensure only high quality uncontaminated catalysts are selected for rejuvenation.


  • Prior to the rejuvenation step, the spent catalyst is regenerated under oxidative atmosphere to remove both carbon and sulphur.


  • Then a propiertary chemical treatment is carried out to remove the inactive crystalline compound such as β-CoMoO4 or NiMoO4, redisperse metals and restore active sites for maximum activity.



  • Excel technology rejuvenates both Type I and Type II catalysts to over 90% of fresh catalyst activity at less than half the cost.

  • More favorable economics than using fresh catalyst.

  • Porocel provides extensive technical support from start-up through the end of cycle to help refiners achieve maximum catalyst performance.

  • Excel proprietary chemical treatment allows removing inactive crytalline structures, such as β--CoMoO4 or NiMoO4, formed during thermal regeneration.






  • Excel rejuvenation technology expands the range of hydrotreating catalysts across all major manufactures and consistently restores Relative Volumetric Activity (RVA), both HDS and HDN, to more than 90% versus the fresh analogue. Excel rejuvenation is applicable to Type I and Type II NiMo and CoMo catalysts in a wide range of hydrotreating applications from naphtha through heavy gas oil.  The following testing was performed under SRGO on a Type II CoMo catalyst:
